Well, acting like a video game is out of the question and you should never try to take something away from you that is not yours. So you can either work hard, save, and buy the car you want, or you can take out a loan. Sure, things get a lot more complicated when the car you dream of is one of 106 cars ever built. Then, realistically, you have two options. Forget about this car or build it yourself.
I’m not going to bet my life that whoever built this car was actually a big McLaren F1 fan because maybe they were just interested in making a profit. But I think it would be strange for someone to go this far without really caring for this car. And no, before you ask that question, this wasn’t built from a Pontiac Fiero like most other replicas are these days.
The man behind this machine opted for a Porsche Boxster instead. So even though this is a replica of the F1, it’s still a mid-engined, rear-wheel drive sports car. So maybe it’s not that bad after all. The seller states that the car is fully functional and you can drive it without worrying about anything. It even has one of those systems that allows you to hydraulically raise the front end to negotiate speed bumps.
A full technical record of the conversion is included in the sale, and you’ll be delighted that the driver is sitting exactly where they would be in an original F1: in the middle of it all. I’ve seen someone convert a BMW E36 this way with a center seat, but the car was used for drifting and it didn’t look as well rounded as this one.
For the average person, this may as well be an original McLaren F1 as I believe few people who are not into cars can tell the difference. Sure, the engine of the little Boxster is nothing compared to the mighty BMW V12 of the McLaren. But then again, if you really enjoy doing trackdays with your car, this is not what you are going to buy. Instead, you go for something that is a little more track-focused.
This replica was built in the Czech Republic and still has an AM / FM stereo, air conditioning, electrically heated seats, Section, and ESP on it, so it should be both fun and easy to drive. There are even a couple of videos of the car and it is very confusing to watch because of the Porsche exhaust notice. The starting bid has been set at £ 51,000 ($ 70,450) and there are no more bids with about 20 hours to go until the auction ends. I guess nobody wants a cheap McLaren.
