Thanks to two leaked images posted by the Italian website LiveGP, we get a glimpse of the 2022 F1 racing car, which has notable changes from the outgoing design. The upper area of the single-seater impresses with its smoother surfaces, while the side pods, side skirts and rear wing show sweeping lines.
The wing itself looks a bit smaller than before, while the front wing has large arrow-shaped end plates. Both elements suggest that the FIA is preparing major updates on the aerodynamic front. The bargeboards seen on the current car have disappeared.
The cockpit area appears to be roughly the same and carries the Halo protection concept introduced for 2018. Yeah, I know most of you don’t like the way it looks and that it basically puts an end to the old school open cockpit race, but it’s not going to go away anytime soon. Safety first.
In case you’re wondering, this single-seater doesn’t belong to any particular team. The “F1 2022” and “F1 Authentics” logos suggest that this is a presentation model designed for the car’s official debut, which is likely scheduled for early 2022.
We don’t have to wait another six months to see it, but this prototype is missing its wheels. And that’s a big deal because by 2022, F1 cars will be running on much bigger wheels. Specifically, the rim size will be increased from 13 to 18 inches to accompany the new ground-effect-oriented design.
Keep in mind that not every F1 car will look exactly like this in 2022. Since Formula 1 is not a spec series, the teams have a degree of freedom to change certain elements in their pursuit of aerodynamic supremacy. Hence, we may see a few interesting and unique add-ons for certain cars.
It’s too early to think about the 2022 season, but eight teams have already confirmed registrations, including Ferrari, McLaren, Williams, Red Bull Racing and Aston Martin. The FIA also confirmed 18 Grand Prix races for 2022. There are no dates but the season will debut in Australia and end in Brazil. The first Miami Grand Prix will take place next year at the Hard Rock Stadium Circuit in Florida.
In the meantime, get ready to compete in the 2021 Formula 1 season with Codemasters F1 2021 video game launching in July. Check out the latest teaser.
