The motorsport-inspired special edition is always a tricky undertaking. Embrace track success with something half-hearted and it looks cynical; When you pay homage to a circuit racer it gets expensive, which can jeopardize both popularity and bottom line. The Mercedes-AMG CLK DTM is probably how to do it; the BMW M4 DTM Championship Edition probably not so much. But the Mercedes also offered a convertible. And the BMW was based on the M4 GTS, which was pretty good. Do you see the problem?
McLaren’s advantage when it came to his most memorable motorsport win was that the limited edition would be based on the 650S – and that was brilliant. Occasionally lost in the (legitimate) frenzy of the 675LT and 720S, the 650 addressed many of the 12C’s grievances and retained so much of what made it distinctive. The P1-inspired facelift looked good, the ride and handling were further improved, and it was spectacular and relentlessly fast. For less than £ 100,000, it looks like a ton of supercars today.
However, this is not a standard 650S. It’s a Le Mans – a special edition created in 2015 for the 20th anniversary of the incredible 24-hour victory of the F1 GTR. Although mechanically identical, the Le Mans roof scoop, the “Sarthe Gray” paintwork and the beautiful five-spoke wheels ensure that it would not be confused with a standard car. McLaren repeated the makeover for the 720S last year (to celebrate 25 years), but without arguably the same success – the Le Mans look really suited the 650S.
Well, the eagle eye may have noticed that this 650S Le Mans isn’t Sarthe Gray as all 50 should be. It is in fact painted Solar Yellow, the same color as the Harrods F1 GTR; According to the advertisement, the sole owner of this example – a “friend of the McLaren F1 family” – was the only LM owner who was allowed to deviate from the prescribed color. Which is pretty cool.
The result is, as the name of the color suggests, an eye-catcher to say the least. The 650 also appears to be without any flaws, despite a healthy 6,000 miles since it was first registered. (Keep in mind the other two Le Mans sold on PH only ran just over 1,000 miles between them.) It’s recently serviced by McLaren, and it’s also sold with a six month warranty.
In addition, the mileage ensures that this 650S Le Mans is actually cheaper than the less-used cars, despite the unique specification. Prices range up to £ 300,000 with this Solar Yellow LM priced at £ 250,000. That’s a lot considering what the 650S can be bought for – and conveniently for 675LT money, too – but it doesn’t look bad at all for a one-off McLaren connected to the Harrods F1 GTR. Especially when a 675LT Carbon series can cost £ 200,000 more. And that won’t look quite right at Bleu Nord.
