Francesco Bagnaia Secures First 2026 MotoGP Win with Late Ducati Charge

Francesco Bagnaia secured his first MotoGP victory of the 2026 season Sunday at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. The Italian rider mounted a late charge on his Ducati to claim the win, overcoming a slow start to the year that saw him score just 10 points in the first two rounds, team officials said.

Bagnaia’s victory at the Circuit of the Americas marked a significant turnaround after a challenging start to the 2026 MotoGP season. The Italian rider overcame early difficulties, having scored only 10 points in the first two rounds held in Thailand and Brazil, according to team officials. His performance in Austin was highlighted by a strong late-race charge on his Ducati, which allowed him to overtake rivals and secure the top spot on the podium.

“I’m happy! I think me and the team deserved a lot this result,” as reported on March 28, 2026.

During the US MotoGP Sprint race, Bagnaia started from fourth position and quickly took the lead after Turn 1, ahead of Pedro Acosta and polesitter Fabio Di Giannantonio, sources confirmed. He managed to build over a one-second lead but began to experience rear grip issues and vibrations in the final laps. Despite these challenges, Bagnaia held off a late challenge from Jorge Martin until the final lap, when Martin briefly overtook him at Turn 12. Bagnaia ultimately finished second in the Sprint, stating to MotoGP.com,

Bagnaia’s struggles with rear tire performance were consistent with those of many riders, as he used a soft rear tire like most of the field and began to struggle after five laps, officials said. He acknowledged the difficulties post-race, noting, “Unluckily I started to struggle a bit too much with the rear after five laps,” and added that the bike was “completely vibrating on the entry to the corners” in the final two laps.

The 2026 season began with signs of improvement, however. Early testing at Sepang in February showed progress in braking, an area that had been a weakness for Bagnaia in 2025. On the second day of the Sepang test, he finished eighth on the timesheets despite carrying a heavy fuel load, according to testing reports. Team sources described the results as a positive step forward, positioning Bagnaia on stronger footing heading into the final test day.

Bagnaia’s career with Ducati has been marked by significant achievements. He clinched his first MotoGP world championship in 2022 after overcoming a 91-point deficit, winning the final two rounds in Valencia, records show. He successfully defended the title in 2023, becoming the first Ducati rider to win back-to-back championships and finishing 39 points ahead of Jorge Martin. His 2024 campaign featured 11 wins, the most by any rider in a single premier class season without securing the title, according to official statistics. Bagnaia holds the record for the most wins, poles, and podiums in Ducati colors, making him the manufacturer’s most successful MotoGP rider to date.

Despite these successes, Bagnaia’s 2025 season ended in fifth place, a result that prompted self-critical reflection from the two-time champion, who downplayed his past accomplishments during a February 2026 interview. Sources confirmed that Ducati’s management was left “scratching their heads” after his 2025 performance, which contributed to his decision to part ways with the team. Bagnaia has since transitioned to a new partnership with Aprilia, joining fellow Italian Marco Bezzecchi and rejecting an offer from Yamaha.

The Austin race represented a crucial morale boost for Bagnaia and his new team, illustrating his capacity to rebound from early-season setbacks. Team officials and MotoGP analysts noted that while it was too early to draw definitive conclusions about the 2026 championship, Bagnaia’s improved braking and race pace suggested a positive trajectory. As the season progresses, his performance in the next rounds will be closely watched to assess whether he can maintain momentum and contend for another title.
