Ferrari could not score a single point at the Paul Ricard Circuit as he surrendered third place in the constructors’ championship to McLaren.
Starting fifth, Sainz fell behind the two McLarens on the track after the pit stop before being overtaken by Fernando Alonso and the two Aston Martins and finishing in 11th place.
“It’s very clear, pretty obvious, that we must have done something really wrong today to be that far off the pace,” Sainz told Sky Sports F1. “It’s a limitation that came up in some races where we really struggled with grit and degradation on the front tires, twice as much as our competitors.
“Cars where we were half a second faster yesterday, like the McLarens, or three tenths faster. I do not remember. Today, towards the end of the race, they were two seconds faster per lap. So it’s clear that when it comes to tires, we have a limitation in the way we operate the tires. It’s something that we have to analyze, something that we have to try to get better through the season. “

It’s not the first time Ferrari has struggled with its tires in 2021, and Sainz says he noticed a similar problem at the Bahrain Grand Prix season opener.
“To be honest, I felt it as soon as I jumped on the car in Bahrain and I had the feeling that something was wrong,” added Sainz. “Now is the time to lower your head and work on it as it clearly limits us on race day.”

Leclerc also had a difficult race after switching to a two-stop strategy and finally finishing 16th overall.
The Monaco driver described it as “one of his most difficult races”.
“It was one of the most difficult races of my time in Formula 1,” explained Leclerc. “I just fought a lot. I think both cars struggled a lot. We’ve had five or six laps on the tires that we did pretty well and we were competitive and even though we tried to take care of the tires, they deteriorated so badly.
“On my side, we tried a second stop towards the end. We knew we would be without points anyway, so we just made another stop. But then of course it was pretty tricky because we were traveling with blue flags and things like that. It was just a very bad race for us. So we have to understand. “
