When both Jan and Kevin Magnussen competed in sports cars in 2021, rumors have risen in recent months that the couple would form a father-son duo, and the news was released on Friday morning during a press event in Denmark.
After Kevin Magnussen left Formula 1 after six seasons with McLaren, Renault and Haas, he drove Daytona prototypes with Chip Ganassi Racing in the IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Team and made his sports car debut at the Rolex 24 in Daytona in 2021.
His 47-year-old father Jan, himself a former F1 racing driver with McLaren and Stewart, was also a free agent after leaving the Corvette factory team in late 2019.

In a 16-year stint representing the GM brand in sports car racing, Magnussen senior won the GT class at Le Mans four times, including three wins in a row in 2004, 2005 and 2006. His last GTLM title came in America 2018.
After completing his Corvette career, Magnussen moved to the High Class Racing Team of his Danish compatriot Anders Fjordbach in the LMP2 class of the FIA World Endurance Championship and formed a trio with Dennis Andersen in the # 20 Oreca.
High Class Racing will get into a second car at Le Mans, with Magnussen and Fjordbach switching to the # 49 Oreca and Kevin Magnussen getting in next to his father.
It is the first time that father and son Magnussen share a car and thus achieve a long-term goal of the Magnussen family.
“Let’s go! My father and I will be racing in the same team at Le Mans this year in LMP2,” said Kevin Magnussen on social media.
“It’s something we’ve tried for years and really a dream comes true.”
The postponed 24 Hours of Le Mans 2021 will take place from August 21 to 22. The new WEC season starts on Saturday May 1st with the 6 Hours of Spa 6, which will be broadcast live on Motorsport.tv.
