Red Bull in a class of its own after Styria

Red Bull in a class of its own after Styria

It was a quiet Grand Prix of Styria and most of the teams achieved about the results they had previously expected. There weren’t many high or low outliers in the numbers.

The first and only outlier of the weekend. Red Bull Racing, especially with Max Verstappen, did everything right in the home race. The only thing missing was Sergio Perez, who was late for a tire change towards the end of the race.

Mercedes didn’t have such a bad weekend. A second and third place for Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas at least ensured that the German team remained close to Red Bull in the constructors’ championship, but the team did not have enough pace to attack Verstappen in Styria.

Lando Norris certainly had a chance on the podium, but the cars seemed to be losing some performance. This quickly relegated Norris to a spot off the podium, and he was the only man to take the points for the team as Daniel Ricciardo only finished 13th in a race he would like to forget.

Aston Martin 5.5

After some strong weekends for Aston Martin, the team’s performance in Styria was poor. Lance Stroll was able to get some points, but Sebastian Vettel was unable to.

Alpine 5.5

Alpine had an almost identical weekend as Aston Martin. One driver scored a few points while the other ran around in the back midfield. Fernando Alonso looked a lot better than Esteban Ocon.

AlphaTauri 7.5

This was the weekend AlphaTauri had to score big points on a track that suits her car. Unfortunately, the team got stuck with only one point from Yuki Tsunoda. Pierre Gasly was unable to continue his run of points after having to retire after one lap.

Carlos Sainz made up for a poor qualifying by finishing sixth, while Charles Leclerc did a good job after his early mistake. After the dramatic weekend in France, that was a welcome 14 points for the Scuderia.

Alfa Romeo 6.5

It wasn’t the best weekend for the Swiss team, but there were signs of improvement. Kimi Räikkönen narrowly missed the points in 11th, Antonio Giovinazzi also failed. The team lacked some speed in Styria.

There isn’t much left to gain for Haas F1 in 2021. The focus is on the next year and they seem happy with that. In Styria, the team showed no improvement.

Eventually, Williams and George Russell seemed to have a chance to score. Russell drove in eighth place for a long time and even said afterwards that he could have fought for seventh place. Those six points that Russell could have earned with seventh place could have been incredibly important, but unfortunately the car broke down. A very unfortunate weekend but they showed speed with at least one of the cars.
