The 27-year-old Italian took a step forward in his third year at Alfa Romeo and has been one of the stars of the 2021 season so far, even if his impressive performances have gone under the radar.

Last time at the Monaco Grand Prix, Giovinazzi scored Alfa Romeo’s first point in 2021 and now he’s eager to renew his contract with the team and secure his future in F1.

When asked if he had any news about his future, Giovinazzi said, “I don’t know, we’ll see what will happen.

“All I can do now is do a good job, drive fast and then we’ll see what happens next year.

“I would very, very much like to stay here next year, I’m still with my team,” he added. “Since I’m staying in season three, I know the people very well. I have a good relationship with the people inside, with Fred [Vasseur, Alfa Romeo team principal] as.

“So we’ll see what’s going to happen, but for now I can just focus on myself and we’ll see what’s going to happen.”

Giovinazzi believes that his hard work is paying off in his pursuit of improvement and that Kimi Raikkonen’s experience as a team-mate has also helped him develop into a better driver.

“It’s my third season in Formula 1, so I have more experience,” he said.

“You know, I think this year we have a faster car, a faster engine so that we can have more fun and if you feel better in the car, you can be at the limit and push more.

“My goal for this season was to improve myself in the second season and I’m glad that all of this work is still working in winter and that I have to keep working to find more in myself. I can still improve a lot.

“Having Kimi by my side is a big help because he’s an experienced driver, a fast driver. So it’s good to have him, to learn from him, and I’m happy that all the work, as I mentioned, is paying off. ”

Regarding Giovinazzi’s performance so far this year, Alfa Romeo team principal Vasseur added: “For me he has probably improved more in race management than in qualifying pace.

“This qualifying pace was already there in the second half of last season and now he can also have very good management and a strong race pace in the race.”
