Who topped the timesheets for FP2 of the 2021 F1 Brazilian Grand Prix?

Alpine rider Fernando Alonso topped the timesheet for the second free practice session of the Brazilian Grand Prix. The Spaniard was followed by Max Verstappen and Valtteri Bottas as second and third fastest. Alonso has led a session for the first time since 2017 and a training session for the first time since 2014.

Due to the sprint format and the extreme development of the track on the unused Interlagos Circuit, the session was pretty atypical for the true pace of a team. During the second practice session of the Brazilian Grand Prix, the teams tested various simulations.

Alpine driver Esteban Ocon set the fourth fastest lap of the session, followed by Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton who was fifth fastest. Red Bull F1 driver Sergio Perez set the sixth fastest time.

Alfa Romeo drivers Antonio Giovinazzi and Kimi Räikkönen set the seventh and tenth fastest times of the session. Between the two Alfa Romeos lay the Ferrari drivers, who set the eighth and ninth fastest times in the second practice session of the Brazilian Grand Prix.

All teams worked on different programs, with some trying to run long-term simulations with heavier amounts of fuel and some working on sprint simulations while sticking to lower amounts of fuel. Although Alonso was 0.864 seconds faster than Verstappen, the pace comparison was not representative and probably could not be applied to the actual race.

Mercedes and Red Bull F1 drivers both spent most of the session assessing their long-term performance over the entire race distance. Since the track temperatures were warmer than the day before, Red Bull Racing around the Interlagos Circuit looked a little more comfortable than the Mercedes.

Overall, it was a pretty fruitless practice for the Brazilian Grand Prix; one of the pitfalls of the sprint race format for the weekend.
