Well, it’s safe to say that the F1 world is different and amazes ordinary people. Every now and then, however, some F1 teams decide to do something extraordinary, even for them. Red Bull Racing is one of those teams that usually try to reach a new level of craziness with each new season.
At the end of each season, Red Bull Racing tries to do something with its car that nobody thought was possible. Recently, the energy drink brand released a video about the five craziest things Red Bull Racing did to an F1 car. Here are the five craziest off-track things that Red Bull Racing did in detail with their F1 car.
5. Donuts on the Burj Al Arab helipad
The Burj Al Arab is one of the tallest hotel buildings in the world. It is also one of the most luxurious hotels in the world and only the elite can afford a stay or even a meal at this five-star hotel.
The entire structure is 280 meters high and has a helipad at a height of 210 meters. Only the people from Red Bull Racing could have thought of making donuts on this helipad at this altitude.
The feat was achieved in 2013 with David Coulthard at the wheel of the Red Bull RB9. This was the last model where the V8 engine screeched at 18,000 rpm and was a sight to see on the Burj Al Arab helipad.
Although the helipad was surrounded by a safety net, this was a dangerous feat as the car could have catapulted through the safety net if it had failed. Luckily it went according to plan and we got to see the amazing footage of it.
4. F1 car vs. ski gold medalist and world champion in the snow
Aksen Lund Svindal is a two-time world champion and Olympic champion in skiing. He is considered by many to be the best Norwegian skier of all time, so it is obvious that he knows his sport well.
However, Red Bull Racing decided to include it in its own sport, on a snowy mountainside. This time it was Max Verstappen at the wheel of the Red Bull Racing RB9. The Formula 1 car had to be prepared for the challenge and was wearing the Pirelli Cinturato rain tires, which are designed for use on an F1 track in heavy rain.
To make it easier to hold on to the snow, it was wrapped with snow chains. It wasn’t a really fair competition, but more of a fun run. Max Verstappen and Aksen Lund Svindal were given two different routes on the mountain to avoid unpleasant incidents. The whole performance has once again given us all brilliant footage that we would otherwise not be able to see.
3rd F1 car against Bath Rugby Club
Rugby teams are known for their courage and sheer strength. Well, Bath Rugby Club Club is one of the best. The club has won the English Cup, the Premiership Rugby Cup, the Heineken Cup and the European Challenge Cup.
In 2016, Red Bull Racing competed against the Bath Rugby Club athletes. Daniel Ricciardo was at the wheel of the Red Bull Racing RB9. The car featured a custom-made flat nose that could be flush with a special device that could harness the strength of all eight rugby players it faced.
The rubgy players grabbed and held their place very well, causing the Red Bull RB9 to spin its wheels at high speed. The car took a step forward, but the rubgy players then held their places and a thermal image of the scene gives us an idea of the heat and energy that went into the performance.
2. A road trip across America in an F1 car
Road trips and motorsport often go hand in hand. Trucks and vans transport the cars, parts, crew and other cargo from one circuit to another or from one circuit to another. All F1 cars also make road trips while locked in their dolly.
This time, however, Red Bull Racing opted for the road trip with the RB9 racing car. Team drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen drove the Red Bull Racing RB9 across the USA.
Daniel Ricciardo drove from San Francisco through Monument Valley and then through Las Vegas. In the second chapter, Max Verstappen drove through the Rocky Mountains and Miami Beach.
Well-known locations like the Golden Gate Bridge, Las Vegas Boulevard, Miami Beach etc. were covered. The team also had pit stops at Death Valley, Twin-Lakes General Store, and Miami Beach. Road trip with the wonderful sound of the 18,000 rpm V8 in your ears? Who could say no to that. But apparently we’re not as skilled as Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen.
1. F1 pit stop in weightlessness
Imagine a pit stop where the entire Formula 1 car is turned upside down to make a tire change easier. Well, it seems like the adventurous folks at Red Bull Racing envisioned just that and found a way to turn their imaginations into reality – Zero Gravity!
The Red Bull Racing F1 team currently holds the record for the fastest pit stop ever in an F1 race. At the 2019 Brazilian GP, the pit crew changed the tires of Max Verstappen’s Red Bull Racing RB15 in an unbelievable 1.82 seconds.
Of course, the team had to laugh when they were given the task of making a pit stop within 20 seconds. But then they were faced with the challenge – the pit stop in question had to be completed without the aid of gravity.
A specially retrofitted Ilyushin IL-76 aircraft was used for this task. The Red Bull Racing RB9 was then loaded onto the aircraft and flown into weightlessness. The team then completed a pit stop. The tires, tools, cars and the pit crew floated in the air during the pit stop.
Thoughts on crazy things from the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team
Red Bull listed their top 5 and we wrote about them in the same order. However, the team did a lot more than just five crazy things.
The Red Bull F1 car was driven to Khardung la, the world’s highest motorable road, the RB7 car was built in La La Land, donuts on Hollywood Boulevard, etc.
