Ahead of the Turkey F1 Grand Prix this weekend, Red Bull and Alpha Tauri showed off a special paint job that they will wear as a tribute to their partnership with Honda.

The Japanese engine supplier will retire after the 2021 season, ending its fourth era in sport, which began with McLaren in 2015.

F1 liveries have gone from representing countries to businesses

In the early days of Grand Prix racing, cars were usually painted in the colors that represented the country in which they were based. Italian cars were red, British entries were green, and so on.

With the rising racing costs, the importance of the sponsors also increased. As a result, F1 cars have been decked out with sponsorship designs instead. The Gold Leaf Tobacco livery that adorned the Lotus 49s during the 1968 season was one of the first examples of this.

However, the design of the sponsorship liveries rarely changed over the course of the year or even over several seasons. However, the 21st century saw a new trend with F1 teams starting to paint their cars with unique paints to celebrate special occasions.

The eye-catching Austrian F1 team Red Bull Racing has been running this practice since entering the sport and has done so on many occasions. The Milton Keynes-based squad has historically worn several specialty liveries as part of marketing and promotional activities, including the Superman livery, the Wings for Life charity livery, the Star Wars livery, the fan tribute livery, and more.

With the news that a special paint job is on display this race weekend, we’re taking a look back at five of F1’s most memorable paint jobs.

The 2019 British Grand Prix was the 1007th race of F1 and Red Bull, sponsored by Aston Martin, came up with a clever idea to celebrate the occasion. Aston Martin is a long-time partner in the James Bond film series. The 1007th Formula 1 race was the perfect opportunity for the British automaker to celebrate its association with the legendary 007.
