Former Formula 1 driver Timo Glock believes Max Verstappen has matured in recent years, especially when it comes to dealing with disappointments on the track. The former Toyota driver highlighted the clash between the Dutchman and reigning champion Lewis Hamilton in Monza as an example of Verstappen’s calm demeanor.
Glock shed light on how Hamilton’s mental approach works in the title fight, telling Sport1:
“Lewis never shows the outside world that he’s under pressure. He knows very well how to come across as calm. Of course, he also knows that it matters when he puts on his helmet. But he found a way to look relaxed and cool. “
Regarding title contender Verstappen’s mental approach this season, the German said:
“Max Verstappen has also succeeded in doing this well so far. He’s made a big leap for me, he’s become much more relaxed, in many ways much more controlled. ““/> Max Verstappen meets Lewis Hamilton at the 2021 Italian Grand Prix in Monza. (Photo by Peter Van Egmond / Getty Images)
Recalling the Monza incident where the duo clashed for the title, Glock said:
“Two years ago, in a situation like the Monza crash, he would probably have opened Lewis’ helmet and hit him.”
He explained Verstappen’s more mature behavior this year by saying:
“Now he leaves it on the left and thinks: ‘Look how you get out of there’.”
Timo Glock praises Max Verstappen’s more relaxed approach to clashes and incidents on the track
Verstappen’s collision with Hamilton at Monza when they were wheel to wheel in the first chicane resulted in both cars being withdrawn from the race. A similar incident on the track with Esteban Ocon at the 2018 Brazilian Grand Prix had gone off the track, causing the Dutchman to nudge the French.
The discussion resulted in a bitter exchange in which the Red Bull Racing driver threatened to beat the Force India driver. The rivalry between the two dates back to their karting and junior formula days. However, as Glock correctly pointed out, Verstappen’s way of dealing with collisions on the track is better now than it was before.

Regarding the season as a whole, Glock said:
“It couldn’t be better. I am very curious to see who will have more stamina in the end. “
The German Sky TV expert assumes that in the title fight between Verstappen and Hamilton, whoever makes the fewest mistakes will prevail at some point. He said:
“Who can keep the error rate as low as possible, because that is what matters in the end – also for the teams.”
Of the team’s rivalries, he said:
“To see Mercedes finally under pressure from Red Bull is something. Before, they always had a cushion. Then you can afford to make a mistake. They can’t do that now. ”Timo Glock will be the new #SkySportF1 expert from the coming 2021 season on @SkySportDE. Glock’s assessment of Verstappen and Hamilton’s approaches this season certainly resonates with how both are represented in public. The focus and tireless perseverance of both drivers have made this season interesting so far.
As for the battle between Mercedes and Red Bull Racing, the Milton Keynes team has always beaten over its weight even when they didn’t have a winning car and this season they have managed to fight Mercedes on an equal footing.
