After their Formula 1 future was questioned after Honda’s shock announcement in early 2020, Red Bull Racing may have come up with a solution to their engine problems.

Following the announcement that Honda would be leaving Formula 1 after the 2021 season, many Red Bull fans feared the AM-RBR team would be left without an engine.

With Honda supplying the engines for the Aston Martin-Red Bull Racing Team, there has been fierce speculation about the team’s next move. With their previous engine partners Renault being pushed aside for the Honda deal, it was unlikely that they would return to them.

There is also little chance that the Red Bull team will conclude a deal with Ferrari or Mercedes-AMG and thereby jeopardize their future.

YouTube: Aston Martin Red Bull RacingRumor has it that Red Bull will buy the IP of the Honda F1 engine to run a continuation program.

Red Bull Racing F1 engine rumor

Now, thanks to the Twitter user MissedApexF1, a new rumor has surfaced. This is exactly the same report that Red Bull “got it” before it was announced. While that’s not concrete evidence, there is a solid track record of backing those rumors.

The tweet from MissedApexF1 says that Red Bull Racing team boss Christian Horner and team advisor Helmut Marko want to buy the IP (Intellectual Property Rights) of Honda’s racing engines. This would enable them to carry out a continuation program and secure the engines for the 2022 season.

The two are apparently in Austria to meet with Dietrich Mateschitz, co-founder of Red Bull, to discuss financing options for the deal.

Missed Apex understands that Horner and Marko are in Austria to meet with Mateschitz. The aim of the meeting is to confirm the financing of the purchase of the Honda IP engine

Will Red Bull Racing work with Mugen?

Allegedly there is talk of the engine being labeled as “Mugen” should the deal go through. Mugen is Honda’s tuning arm, and longtime F1 fans will remember that Mugen-Honda supplied engines to the Jordan team in 1998 after Honda’s first withdrawal from the series.

Mugen is also based in Milton Keynes along with Aston Martin Red Bull Racing, which means the two teams could easily work together on the project.

According to The Race, Honda has stated that they are “ready to consider”. [the deal], because it wants to make its exit as painless as possible. “

While no formal motion or motion has been filed at the time of writing, it may only be a matter of time if the rumor is true.
