Red Bull and Toro Rosso confirmed an unchanged driver line-up for the 2020 season on Tuesday, with Alex Albon staying with Red Bull alongside Max Verstappen. Pierre Gasly and Daniil Kvyat will drive for Toro Rosso – a team that will be renamed AlphaTauri for 2020.

Verstappen was suspended for the Red Bull senior team, but the team’s second place seemed to be taken.

Albon did best in a direct comparison to Verstappen in 2019. Despite sitting on a Toro Rosso court year-round, Kvyat scored a podium – Toro Rosso’s second after Sebastian Vettel’s 2008 Italian Grand Prix. Gasly was arguably the weakest claim to the Red Bull seat. Despite starting the year at Red Bull, a series of mistakes – which started with a crash in pre-season testing – caused his stocks to drop dramatically, and he has done little to recreate that in subsequent races.

With two races remaining, Albon is sixth in the F1 standings with 84 points, while Gasly is eighth with 77 points and Kvyat is 13th with just 34 points.

“Alex has done very well since his debut with the Belgian team and his results – seven places in the top six – speak for themselves,” said Christian Horner, Aston Martin Red Bull Racing team principal. “This level of consistency is extremely hard to deny and, coupled with a growing reputation as a tenacious, dedicated racing driver, Alex has proven that he fully deserves to continue his advances at Aston Martin Red Bull Racing. There is still a lot of potential to be unlocked and we look forward to seeing Alex alongside Max in 2020. “

Toro Rosso team boss Franz Tost was just as happy with his driver pairing and said: “I am very happy to keep Pierre and Daniil for the next season. Both drivers have done really well this season and have proven to be very competitive in their years in F1, realizing the car’s potential and providing valuable feedback to make improvements.

“This young but experienced duo, combined with what will hopefully be a competitive car, will be the best factor in achieving a very successful season in 2020 and I look forward to this expanded collaboration.”
