In an interview with David Coulthard, Jos Verstappen compared the first impressions of Max Verstappen’s car with the Mercedes package from the pre-season test in Bahrain. The former F1 driver felt that Red Bull Racing had a more competitive package and seeing Mercedes struggle made him expect a good season for his son and the Milton Keynes-based team.

Max Verstappen’s father described Mercedes’ difficulties in pre-season tests:

“I have to say right away, and what I always do is that I want to hear it from him (Max). First impressions are so important and when he made the first runs and came out I could see it and what he was saying and also the lap times showed that we had a competitive car. Mercedes was struggling with its buttocks, so I thought we might have a very good season ahead of us. And it was like that. ”

According to the current world champion’s father, the pre-season test gave an analogy to the season ahead, having seen the performance of the Mercedes and Red Bull F1 teams’ cars. The senior Verstappen felt that the most important feedback on the car was from his son, which gave him confidence that the championship was a realistic goal.

Max Verstappen reveals that he has remained neutral in dealing with press opinions

According to the newly crowned world champion, staying neutral while dealing with positive and negative press in an intense title fight and his approach to relieving the pressure throughout the season was very important. Max Verstappen announced that the key to dealing with the press was staying neutral.

Describing his approach to facing the press this season, Verstappen said:

“That’s why I’ve always tried to be very neutral. Of course, when people are positive, it’s nice to hear. I don’t really take much with me. And even if people are negative, if you are always very balanced, then nothing can really bother you, especially I tried this year and it was very important. Of course you have the bias and the two sides in general, so you stay very neutral and nothing can really affect you. ”

With his championship title this season, Max Verstappen is the first non-Mercedes driver in the V6 turbo hybrid era that Mercedes has dominated since 2014.
