Red Bull Racing is reportedly considering all available options for its second driver to partner with Max Verstappen for the 2023 season. The Milton Keynes team could potentially replace Sergio Perez with another driver after the Mexican’s contract expires at the end of next season.
The new developments come from Pierre Gasly, who previously drove for Red Bull and is currently with the sister team Scuderia Alpha Tauri. In an interview with Express UK, the Frenchman said:
“Of course, my priority is initially with Red Bull, but at the moment they have decided to continue with Sergio. I don’t know what they’re up to. ”“ I’m 25, but my goal is to be in first place as soon as these guys look at who can be a replacement. It is important for me to show that if there is a vacancy I should be the obvious choice. ”In 2023 there could be an option. I’ll try to put myself in the best position, but it’s a discussion that we know we’ll have with Red Bull next year. We have to see what the opinion is about Red Bull over the next two years because I’ve been with them for eight years now. It is a long time.”
In 2017 Gasly was promoted from Toro Rosso (now Alpha Tauri) to Red Bull to replace Daniel Ricciardo, who was then tied to Renault. However, the first half of the season was a disaster for the French – he couldn’t keep up with Max Verstappen’s pace and he lacked confidence in the car. Mid-season he was demoted back to Toro Rosso, with Alexander Albon replacing him.
Albon was better than Gasly when it came to racing speed, but he still struggled to keep up with Max Verstappen in qualifying. He was taken over for 2020 but after not showing much improvement, Red Bull decided to demote him to a reserve and simulator role. Sergio Perez, who had just lost his seat at Aston Martin, was brought on board for 2021.
Throughout the season, Perez generally played at a higher level than both Gasly and Albon had. However, he also had some of the same problems as his predecessors and struggled to get the best qualifying performance. This meant that its races were often compromised from the start and Red Bull could possibly have cost the constructors’ championship.
Max Verstappen believes the Silverstone crash prevented him from sealing the title sooner
Max Verstappen believes he would have completed the drivers’ championship much earlier in the season if he hadn’t crashed at Silverstone after getting tangled with Lewis Hamilton.
In an interview with GPFans, Horner said:
“[Max Verstappen] Head butts against the tire wall at Silverstone weren’t great. Those were key moments, otherwise it would have been decided much earlier. Especially towards the end of the season, a couple of wins that we didn’t expect, or a pole position or even the fastest lap for an extra point. Those things actually play a role these days when you have a championship fight like we did. “
Max Verstappen faced Lewis Hamilton on the first lap of the British Grand Prix while aggressively defending the lead against the Mercedes driver. The massive 51G crash severely damaged the Dutchman’s Red Bull and took him out of the race.

Meanwhile, Hamilton, who was caring for a damaged car, managed to overtake the overtaken leader Charles Leclerc on the final laps to seal his first win in five races and close his gap to Max Verstappen in the championship.
