Red Bull F1 driver Max Verstappen is not impressed by Mercedes’s appeal to the “right to be checked” because he had expected it. He appeared to force Lewis Hamilton off the track on lap 48 of the Brazilian Grand Prix, but the Stewards considered it a racing incident and no penalty was issued.

The Dutchman explained his mental state behind the scenes and does not expect to be punished for the incident. In the run-up to the Qatar Grand Prix, Max Verstappen responded to Mercedes’ request by saying:

“No [I’m] not really surprised, but that’s how it works. I don’t even think about that. If, if, if … it’s not the end of the world. I don’t think about it much because I’m not in control of such things. I am the driver and I just have to concentrate on what is happening on the track. “

The Dutchman announced his move after the Brazilian race, calling it a “tough race” during a title fight and did not expect a penalty. After the appearance of on-board material from the incident, Mercedes was asked to submit a request to review the stewards’ decision.

When asked whether the move deserves a penalty, Max Verstappen said:

“I don’t expect that to happen because I thought it was a fair and tough race between two guys fighting for the championship. So it wouldn’t have been an easy pass anyway, because I’m not like that and I don’t think what it should be like when you’re fighting for the title. “

Mercedes team officials Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen were called to meet the commissioners ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix at 5:00 p.m. local time. Red Bull F1 as a team expressed its surprise at the request of Mercedes.

Max Verstappen hopes to extend the points lead at the Grand Prix of Qatar

While the review request from Mercedes takes its course over the weekend, the Red Bull F1 driver will have to focus on the GP weekend in Qatar in 2021. The Dutchman has to win the race at the Losail International Circuit in order to confidently overtake his rival Lewis Hamilton in the championship and to control the momentum for the next two races.

The gap between the two title contenders is currently 14 points, with Max Verstappen at the top. However, winning the Qatar GP could help him secure a comfortable buffer over the last two races. Ideally, Red Bull F1 are hoping for a 1-2 finish or a double podium at Losail to minimize Hamilton’s chances of making up ground in the overall standings.
