According to Christian Horner, Max Verstappen returned more determined and stronger after several setbacks suffered during the 2021 title campaign. The Red Bull F1 Team Principal spoke at the FIA Champions press conference. Horner spoke of key moments in the 2021 season that shaped the fighting spirit of the Dutch champions.
Describing the setbacks that season that affected Verstappen’s prospects, Horner said:
“It was important to get these victories, the series of results [France and double-header in Austria]. Then there were moments like Azerbaijan [Verstappen’s tire blowout] we had to come back from … It was important to come back strong, and that’s what Max did, and then Silverstone was a key moment and again how he came back from it. “
A certain verdict of the audience on Max Verstappen’s 2021 title campaign was that he fought consistently every weekend, which is reflected in the statistics for the entire season. The Dutchman’s ability to return every weekend and race with a determined attitude has been praised by the audience, fellow drivers, TV experts and analysts in the paddock.
Christian Horner believes Austin will win one of Max Verstappen’s best performances of the season
Christian Horner sees Max Verstappen’s victory in Austin as one of the decisive moments of the season. What made it special was that the victory took place on what has been dubbed Lewis Hamilton Territory in terms of vehicle and driver performance. According to the Red Bull F1 team principal, this was an unexpected win as their car was theoretically unsuitable for the track and it was one of the tracks where they didn’t expect to be extremely competitive.
Horner explained the significance of Verstappen’s victory in Austin:
“For me, he delivered a really outstanding win in the last part of the championship, especially Austin, where we were definitely the underdogs that day.”
Mercedes and Hamilton dominated Austin on Friday and Saturday. The Dutchman, who won the Circuit of the Americas in Texas and extended his championship lead over his rival, was one of the turning points of the season. Emerging victorious on a track where Hamilton had five wins it was one of Max Verstappen’s greatest accomplishments of 2021 and one that defined him as championship material.
