Engine stop approval a boost for Red Bull

Red Bull

In order to support Red Bull in taking over the Honda engines next year, an engine stop will apply from the end of this year for the rest of the current regulatory era. This means that the teams cannot develop their engines beyond the end of the F1 season in 2021.

In what Formula 1 described as “a major development for the sport, reflecting the unity and spirit of collaboration” between them, the FIA and the teams, the proposal was duly adopted after Thursday’s F1 commission meeting.

No power balance rule

The “balance of power” rule, which would allow manufacturers with less competitive engines not to be disadvantaged, was not discussed and is not on the table for the time being.

There are arguments as to how such a system would be beneficial in order to achieve equity on the engine side, but the parameters for the approach have yet to be discussed.

The approval to freeze the engine is a huge boost for Red Bull as the team can now take over the reins of the Honda engine program from 2021 when the Japanese manufacturer pulls out of the sport.

Red Bull would have found it difficult to get a good engine deal given its battered relationship with Renault and direct competition from Ferrari and Mercedes. With an engine shutdown due at the end of the 2021 season, Red Bull has a good chance of battling the top teams without worrying about a possible loss of competitiveness on the engine side.

The approval to freeze motors helps reduce potential costs that could be incurred by designers in developing these motors. It also shifts the focus for designers to the next engine specification to be introduced in 2025.

The last piece of the puzzle when the engine stops should be the rule of “balance of power”, because no team wants to be disadvantaged by an uncompetitive engine over several seasons. It remains to be seen how F1 masters this challenge and maintains equal opportunities on the engine side in the coming seasons.

However, getting the engine freeze approval is an important step as Red Bull would not have had a clear path for the next season if the proposal hadn’t been approved. With clarity at the engine front, the team can plan their next course of action.
