Albon has “done everything” to save the Red Bull F1 seat

Albon feels he has "done everything" to save Red Bull seat

Albon qualified fifth in Abu Dhabi, but was able to overtake McLaren’s Lando Norris for fourth in the first stint before the safety car pulled him close to Mercedes-Lewis Hamilton.

Although Albon couldn’t put Hamilton under pressure at the beginning, he was able to reduce the gap from nine seconds to just 1.5 seconds in the last 15 laps and crossed the finish line in fourth.

Red Bull is considering replacing Albon with Sergio Perez for the 2021 season but has repeatedly said it wants to give its reigning driver as much time as possible to claim the seat.

When Motorsport.com asked after the race in the Abu Dhabi paddock what the result would mean for his future, Albon said he was proud of the achievement.

“I feel like it was my best weekend in terms of performance,” said Albon.

“I would like to thank the guys at the plant and here for the great support. We didn’t give up, we always tried to find solutions and get more comfortable with the car and it’s a difficult car to drive.

“But to keep pushing and get my best result, of course under all the pressure of the weekend and everything that happens, I am proud of myself and felt that it was a good end to the year.

“I can’t really say whether it’s enough or not. But of course I have the feeling that I’ve done everything. I leave the decision to the others.”

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner agreed with Albon’s assessment that it was his strongest weekend of the year.

“Alex did a very good job today,” said Horner.

“It was probably his toughest weekend together of the season and he drove a good race. He put pressure on Lewis at the end of the race there.

“That now gives us a full set of information to analyze and figure out what we’re going to do.”

When asked when a decision can be expected, Horner replied: “I’m sure you will know as soon as we have made it. It will not take too long.”
