Despite confirming his exit from Ducati at the end of the year, Jack Miller proved he had finally gelled with his GP22 at Sachsenring on Friday.
Less than two-tenths covered three GP22s at the top of the times by the end of day one in Germany and Miller was confident there was more to come as the weekend developed.
“Yeah, the bike’s working well,” Miller said on Friday evening after joining his teammate Pecco Bagnaia and Mooney VR46’s Luca Marini in the top three. “It’s nice to be back here at Sachsenring, massive crowd already so that’s awesome to see.
“The day has been good from the beginning,” he continued. “We made a massive step forward in the test in Barcelona, and just moving on from there. What we learned and what we changed in Barcelona has really helped us to hit the ground running here in Germany because I’ve been suffering a lot since the beginning of the year to be honest, to stop this thing, to stop my bike.
“We shifted quite a lot my riding position, we moved the handlebars forward I think a whole heap. Simon [Crafar] actually went into it during the session when I watched FP1 back, he could notice that we moved the bike.
“We moved it around quite a lot, more similar to what the other boys are on and immediately it’s been able to give me a lot of front confidence back in it. To exploit the strong aspects of this bike and how it brakes but without sacrificing the turning.
“Here is the tightest track we’ve got and to have three Ducati GP22s on the first three positions is impressive because if you look on paper, this probably wouldn’t be the Ducati track. But we’re just getting to show again that the GP22 is getting stronger and stronger.
“It’s an all round package now I feel and it’s doing a fantastic job. I mean, like I said, it’s tight through that first sector and this thing’s working really well through there.
“The temperatures could be higher tomorrow and Sunday, but I’m confident I can do well anyway.”
