Valtteri Bottas sells his Mercedes AMG GT-R in Finland

While a lot is being written about the future of Valtteri Bottas in the Anglo-German Mercedes F1 world championship team, the reality is that he will no longer have a contract at the end of the season. Increasingly, Lewis Hamilton doesn’t seem to be finished with Formula 1 – which opens the window for George Russell, who is slated to be the future world champion. Russell, who impressed when he replaced Hamilton late last year, is also a Mercedes-signed driver who is currently on the Williams team. The heat is on Bottas to be closer, if not even beating him, to Hamilton at the racing pace.

Now Bottas has announced the sale of his AMG GT R, which could be harmless. This will continue to fuel the fire that something is wrong between the German-English team and the Finnish driver. Because of the Bottas situation, tensions are already brewing at Mercedes. At the 2021 Sakhir GP, Bottas was overtaken by a green Russell and was supposed to win the race, but a pit stop mishap and a flat tire cost him a race win. There was also murmur that Lewis Hamilton stopped speaking to Russell because of this, as he was used to serving as bait for the contract negotiations between him and Mercedes.

In the first four races Bottas was clearly behind the pace, not only Hamilton but even Verstappen, although Mercedes won three of the four races. In fact, Bottas didn’t score at Imola because Russell bumped into him. But Russell initially blamed Bottas for the crash. That creates more friction in the situation.

Now that Bottas no longer has a contract after the year and Hamilton will apparently be with Mercedes for a few more years, Wolff has to decide who will stay. In addition to Russell, Mercedes also has Esteban Ocon, who is under contract with Alpine.

If Bottas doesn’t win the world title or at least beat Verstappen, which he didn’t last year, there is a very high probability that he doesn’t have a place in the Brackley-based outfit. News that he is selling his Mercedes AMG GTR is likely to add more fuel to the fire.
