Valtteri Bottas’ second place at the F1 Grand Prix of Austria in Spielberg, Austria, on June 4, was his fifth podium of the 2021 season and 61st of his Formula 1 career.
With 61st place, Bottas overtook three-time champion Nelson Piquet to 10th place on the list of the most career podiums for a driver in Formula 1. This list includes seven Formula 1 champions and three others who place second in the Formula 1 championship .
Here are the top 10:

The only 31-year-old Valtteri Bottas from Mercedes-F1-Team reached 61st place at the F1 Grand Prix of Austria in 2021 with a second place in Spielberg.Bottas’ 61 podium places came in his first 165 races and included nine wins. He has not yet won a championship, but has finished second twice.
David Coulthard celebrates his 62nd and final podium finish at the 2008 Canadian F1 Grand Prix in Montreal. Coulthard’s career spanned from 1994 to 2008 and included 246 starts. Coulthard won 13 times and was runner-up in 2001 behind Michael Schumacher.
Rubens Barrichello was one of the most productive drivers in Formula 1 history and started 322 races from 1993 to 2011 in his 19-year career. Barerichello stood on the podium 68 times and won 11 races. His best result in the championship was the second he achieved in both 2002 and 2004 as a team-mate of Michael Schumacher at Ferrari.
Ayrton Senna, who died in an accident in the prime of his career at the age of 34, achieved 80 podium places in 162 starts, which corresponds to a success rate of 49.4 percent. Surprisingly, this success rate ranks only fourth on this top 10 list. The three-time Formula 1 champion drove in Formula 1 from 1984 to 1994. He won 41 races.
There was a time, not so long ago, when it looked like Fernando Alonso was riding the wave to the top of this list. In the first six years of his Formula 1 career, from 2001 to 2007, Alonso made 49 podiums. He also added 42 more podiums from 2010-13. However, Alonso has not reached a podium since 2014. By the F1 Grand Prix of Austria in 2021, Alonso had 97 podiums and 32 wins from 321 starts. His last win was in 2013.
Kimi Raikkonen, who saw his career skyrocket because the F1 driver failed to make the 2018 podium. Raikkonen showed he would be a force in F1 when he finished on the podium 10 times in 16 races in his third race year in the series in 2003.
All in all, he has 103 podium places in 339 starts up to the Austrian Grand Prix in 2021. He celebrated his biggest podium place between 2005 and 2008, when he stepped onto the podium 39 times in four seasons. He reached his last podium in Brazil in the penultimate race of the 2018 season.
Alain Prost, a four-time F1 champion, is second ever with a success rate of 52.5 percent on the podium. In 202 F1 starts, he made 106 tips for the podium.
His best season for podium finishes was surprisingly none of his four championship seasons, as he finished in the top three in 14 of 16 races in 1988. Arton Senna won the F1 title that year with 11 top 3 and eight wins. Prost, who scored 51 career wins, won seven races in the 1988 season but fell three points behind in the championship.
Four-time champion Sebastian Vettel makes the podium on this list with the third-most podium places in F1 history. Vettel extended a current run of consecutive seasons to 14 with at least one podium when he finished runner-up in the 2021 Azerbaijan F1 Grand Prix. At the Austrian Grand Prix 2021, Vettel checked in with 122 podium places in 266 starts.
Nobody will catch Michael Schumacher in second place on this list in the foreseeable future. The seven-time champion had 155 podiums in 306 starts, making it one of only three drivers with more than 50 podiums to finish on the podium in more than 50 percent of his races. Schumacher also had a run of 15 consecutive years with at least one podium from 1992 to 2006.
The only question in this category is when, not if Lewis Hamilton reaches the 200th podium milestone. Hamilton is the first ever in the podium percentage of those with at least 50 podium places (171 podium places in 275 starts, 62.2 percent) up to the Austrian Grand Prix in 2021.
Hamilton has been a role model of greatness throughout his career, winning at least five podiums in each of his 15 seasons in Formula 1. He is obliged to compete at Mercedes until at least 2023.
