British Formula 1 driver George Russell will join the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team in the coming season, the team announced on Tuesday.

“After Valtteri Bottas’ departure to Alfa Romeo Racing, George Russell will be Lewis Hamilton’s team-mate from 2022,” Mercedes said in a statement.

“It’s official. I’m going to be a Mercedes F1 driver next year. This is a special day for me and I would like to say a big thank you to Williams Racing, Mercedes AMG F1 and everyone who has helped me get where I am I’m speaking today. Without each and every one of you I wouldn’t have made it, “Russell said on Twitter.

The Finnish Mercedes driver Bottas will switch to Alfa Romeo in the coming season, the Formula 1 team announced on Monday.

Williams signed the 23-year-old Russell back in 2019 when he made his Formula 1 debut.

At the rain-soaked Belgian Grand Prix in August, Russell took second place, his first podium in F1.

He has contested 51 grands prix so far.
