Valtteri Bottas drives for Alfa Romeo in F1 2022
Updated September 6, 2021 at 12:45 p.m. After much speculation and intrigue, Valtteri Bottas confirmed that he will leave the Mercedes-AMG F1 team at the end of 2021 and switch to Alfa Romeo. The Finn has been driving for the Brackley-based German team since 2017 after replacing outgoing champion Nico Rosberg, but failed to fully challenge his teammate Sir Lewis Hamilton when the Brit increased his Formula 1 titles from three to seven.
There has been much speculation as to whether Bottas would get another one-year deal from Mercedes, as youngster George Russell is also on the team’s books and has pushed his claim for a spot in 2021 with incredible qualifying results for his first two years Williams now has a number of points, including a podium at the rainy Belgian Grand Prix. Russell is expected to be confirmed at Mercedes shortly.
Bottas has signed a “multi-year contract” with the former Sauber team, after speculation he could return to the old Williams team.
“A new chapter in my racing career begins,” said Bottas. “I look forward to coming to Alfa Romeo in 2022 and beyond for a new challenge with a legendary manufacturer.
“Alfa Romeo is a no-introduction brand, they have made some great pages in F1 history and it will be an honor to represent this brand.
“The potential of the setup in Hinwil is clear and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to lead the team forward, especially since the new 2022 regulations give the team the chance to make a leap in performance.
“I’m grateful for the trust the team has placed in me and I can’t wait to return their trust. I’m as hungry as ever for results and, when the time comes, for wins.”
