Red Bull boss Christian Horner shows fear that Mercedes is "blocking opportunities" | F1 | Sports

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner has voiced his fears about the future of Albon and admitted that he hopes that title rivals Mercedes won’t get in the way of a great opportunity for the young driver. A driver carousel is currently taking place in F1 before the new season.

Albon was fired from Red Bull at the end of the 2020 season after struggling to meet constructors’ high expectations. Perez joined Racing Point’s partner title contender Max Verstappen this year.

But Red Bull is still keeping a close eye on its development driver and wants to get him back on the best possible path in F1.

The Thai-British driver is set to return to F1 next season, with both Williams and Alfa Romeo showing interest in including him.

And Horner, speaking ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, announced that a decision about Albon’s future could be made as early as next week amid the current driver carousel.

Mercedes Formula E driver Nyck de Vries is believed to be in the driver’s seat as a partner of Nicholas Latifi for Williams’ next term should Albon be denied the opportunity.

Albon had driven for 12 races for Red Bull’s junior team Toro Rosso in 2019 before being promoted after an impressive performance on the biggest stage.

But just as Pierre Gasly was ruthlessly demoted, Albon could not keep the Red Bull place while Horner was looking for a driver who could regularly collect points next to Verstappen in order to win the constructors’ championship.
