Amid news of teams like Aston Martin and Alpine losing their sponsorship deals, the Austrian team appears to have capitalized on their recent world title by catching the attention of PokerStars, an online betting platform headquartered in Ireland.
According to the team’s official website, the new relationship allows for expanding the viewer base of both sports and will help F1 fans better understand the world of poker and vice versa. The site also states that PokerStars prides itself on its safe and responsible values, while still offering top-notch entertainment for fans – something it shares with Red Bull.
Team Principal Christian Horner said of the partnership:
“Following last year’s blockbuster Formula 1 season, I am delighted to start 2022 by announcing PokerStars as our new partner. In our sport, we see constant evolution, not just in the cars, but also in new technologies aimed at reaching the sport’s global fan base to offer them new and interactive experiences. We are delighted to welcome PokerStars to the team as F1 experiences a period of growth in new and existing territories and look forward to kickstarting the 2022 season together.”

Hodgkinson, the head of mechanical engineering at the Brackley-based team, will become technical director for engines for the Austrian team in 2022. The Mercedes team said in a statement:
“Mercedes F1 and Red Bull today reached an agreement on the appointment of Ben Hodgkinson. Under the terms of this agreement, Ben, who joined Mercedes in August 2001, can join Red Bull Powertrains effective May 24, 2022.”
The move comes after Christian Horner’s team allowed their chief aerodynamics engineer, Dan Fallows, to join Aston Martin, a Mercedes customer team.
While it’s unclear if Hodgkinson’s experience in powerplant development will help Horner’s team defend Max Verstappen’s world title in 2022, fans are excited for this new era for both teams.
