Steiner: Regulations for 2022 not too restrictive for designers
Despite concerns that a 2022 sample chassis on display has suggested that F1 will resemble a specific car design next year, Haas boss Steiner said there won’t be as much resemblance between next year’s cars as suggested.
“Many interpretations of it are like ‘yes it’s a special car’ [but] there is still a lot of developmental play, ”said the Haas boss.
“The spaces in which you can develop are smaller, but still free. It’s not like an IndyCar, that’s spec, you can’t do anything. You still have room to do things.
“To be honest, it will be less noticeable when people do different things because the devil is in the details. If you just take the bargeboards behind the front wheels at the moment, for example, there is so much going on there. they’re gone [in 2022] and you don’t see them.
“But from that side, there are still many things you can do to get the diffuser working. So they are different. I wouldn’t compare it to an IndyCar because that’s obviously a spec car, a Formula 2 car is a spec car.
“A Formula 1 car, there is still a lot of work and areas that you can work on in the new regulations. What you saw was a principle of a car, what the base will look like, but the cars will be quite sophisticated. With a few hundred engineers on each team working on it, they’ll find places where they can do something different. So it will also remain very competitive technically. “
Nobody knew who I was last year – Dennis
Jake Dennis thanked the outgoing Formula E manufacturer BMW and the Andretti team for taking his chance at the start of the season.
The Red Bull simulator driver entered Formula E as a rookie at the start of the season and replaced Alexander Sims on the team. After not racing in a single-seater since a stint in Formula 3 in 2017, he became the only rookie in Formula E history to take two wins in his debut season and third in the championship standings, failure in the last race.
He said BMW “took a chance” to sign him instead of opting for an experienced Formula E driver. “I don’t think any of the Formula E teams knew who I was at this time last year,” said Dennis. “Of course I drove sports cars at a high level, showed a good performance and I thank BMW very much for taking the opportunity. They had so many other drivers to take and they went the safe route but obviously they took the chance.
“For me, sitting here in the title fight and going into this last race is proof of the season that we had. Finishing third in the world championship as a rookie is something special and we can enjoy that.”
Dennis signed for Andretti next season, who will continue with their current BMW powertrain despite the departure of the works team.
