After the Mercedes team boss showed his confidence, de Vries sent a message to the paddock with his Formula E success.
The 26-year-old has given a clear signal that he is ready to move up to F1, while Vandoorne may be ready for another crack of the whip as well.
The withdrawal of Mercedes from Formula E puts the whole situation in a nutshell – although it is quite conceivable that one or both of FE may have retired from the series by the time the team is eliminated if they can still drive for the Brackley company team they find themselves without a seat.
However, the ongoing speculation about who will work with Lewis Hamilton in the other Mercedes car next season may offer one of them a path into F1 next season.
