Mick Schumacher has modest goals for returning to Haas F1 in 2022

Mick Schumacher has modest goals for returning to Haas F1 in 2022

  • Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin return for a second Formula 1 season with the Haas F1 team in 2022.
  • Schumacher and Mazepin have not yet achieved a top 10 finish in 2021 for a team that announced at the beginning of the season that they would focus their car development on 2022.
  • The announcement leaves only one seat in the F1 field for 2022 unconfirmed, namely at Alfa Romeo.

Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin will return to the Hass F1 Team in 2022.

The Haas F1 Team confirmed the line-up on Thursday before the F1 Russian Grant Prix this weekend in Sochi. The deal will keep both drivers in the same places for at least one more season.

The 22-year-old Schumacher was rumored to be fighting for a seat at Alfa Romeo for next year, but in the end Haas and Ferrari decided to keep the son of seven-time F1 champion Michael Schumacher for another season with Haas.

Schumacher, a Ferrari Academy driver, is said to be driving at Ferrari one day. In the meantime, the goals at Haas remain modest.

“Hopefully we’re in the middle of the field,” said Schumacher on Thursday during media availability when asked about the goals for 2022. “I think that’s an achievable goal. We know that we started this project a little earlier than everyone else. We have certainly spent most of our budget on it for this year. Hopefully that will only give us a little. ” especially at the beginning of the year, and we can hopefully say that we are consistently on the points. I think this is definitely a very big step forward and I just know that we will work very, very hard to make that happen. “

Haas made no secret of the fact that it pulled the plug early on in the development of its 2021 cars. The results were not a surprise. The team is last in the Formula 1 constructors’ championship and has not yet scored a single point in 2021. It’s the worst team in its six years in Formula 1.

As for Schumacher, his best result so far is a 12th place finish in Hungary (six of the 20 cars in the field in this race were crashed and a seventh was disqualified). Schumacher only finished three of 14 races in the lead. If it’s positive, Schumacher got plenty of sitting time in his rookie season because he finished all 14 races.

Schumacher has overtaken his team-mate Mazepin eleven times in 14 races. Nevertheless, Schumacher wants more from his racing weekend.

    Much more.

“In qualifying (there) we are closest to the cars in front of us,” said Schumacher. “In the races we’re still a bit distant and struggling to bring everything together. But yeah, the races this year were definitely okay at times, but mostly difficult, and the qualifying sessions were very enjoyable and definitely great great fun complete.

“Of course, qualifying is pretty short (for us) at the moment. If you get to Q2 and Q3 that day and can plan and apply the strategy, that’s very, very interesting in my opinion. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Team boss Günther Steiner said that both Schumacher and Mazepin will be rewarded with new deals for how they have mastered a difficult season.

“It was certainly a tough season with the package we had, but at the same time they both took on the challenge and worked closely with the team to learn our processes and adapt to the rigors of a Formula 1 campaign and so on . ” that brings – both internally and externally, ”said Steiner. “When we look to the 2022 season now, we are confident that we can move forward as a team and offer Mick and Nikita a competitive racing package to take the next step in their Formula 1 careers.”

The announcement leaves only one place open on the starting line-up for 2022. Alfa Romeo had previously announced that the current Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas will occupy a seat. The other seat, currently occupied by Antonio Giovinazzi, has not been confirmed for 2022. Formula 2 driver Guanyu Zhou is believed to be a front runner for this seat while Giovinazzi is also in the race.

Zhou is currently second in the Formula 2 classification with three race weekends remaining.
