Michael Gove condemns Mercedes F1 deal with Grenfell insulation company

The Mercedes Formula 1 team has been criticized by a cabinet minister for signing a partnership agreement with a company behind one of the isolations at Grenfell Tower.

Michael Gove said he would write to the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team to ask them to reconsider the deal with Kingspan.

The community secretary said it was “deeply disappointing” that the team – for which Lewis Hamilton drives – has accepted the sponsorship.

Kingspan’s Kooltherm K15 insulation was one of the products installed during the Grenfell Tower renovation, although most of the insulation for the West London skyscraper was manufactured by a different company.

An investigation is looking into how the Grenfell Tower was coated with flammable materials, which contributed to the spread of the flames that shot into the tower in June 2017, killing 72 people.

Mr Gove said: “Deeply disappointed that @ MercedesAMGF1 is accepting sponsorship from the Kingspan disguise company while the Grenfell investigation is ongoing.

“I’m going to write to Mercedes to ask them to reconsider.

“The Grenfell community deserves better.”

Kingspan has argued that it played no role in the design of the Grenfell Tower cladding system, where its K15 product made up about 5% of the insulation purchased for use.

The company said that K15 was used as a replacement product in a non-building code and unsafe system without the knowledge of Kingspan.
