Mercedes sets the launch date for the 2021 F1 car on March 2

Mercedes will launch its 2021 car on March 2nd, taking the first step in the hunt for the eighth record double in the drivers ‘and constructors’ championships in Formula 1.

The 2021 car will be officially known as the Mercedes-AMG F1 W12 E Performance, with the “E Performance” section reflecting the new designation of all upcoming Mercedes-AMG hybrid cars. The W12 will be unveiled during a digital induction event as the UK remains locked and both drivers will speak. The ongoing back-and-forth between Lewis Hamilton and the team over a new contract means only Valtteri Bottas is currently confirmed for 2021.

The W12 will not come with Mercedes’ innovative two-axis steering system (DAS), which was introduced and traversed after it was allowed to drive the car last season but was banned for 2021.

“Unfortunately, 2021 also means saying goodbye to an old friend from 2020, the DAS system,” said Technical Director James Allison recently. “It’s a shame for us because it was a useful thing for our car, it performed well on many tracks last year, so we say goodbye to it with a little sadness. But those are the rules, and like everyone else we are heading into 2021 with conventional steering. “

The confirmation of the Mercedes launch date follows McLaren (February 15) and Alfa Romeo (February 22), while Aston Martin has only announced that it will present its new car in March. Ferrari has also proposed showing its car at the first test, although that was before the tests were moved from Barcelona to Bahrain from March 12-14.
