F1: Williams new boy Alex Albon unclear about "very strict" contract clauses to protect the Mercedes engine

Alex Albon has admitted that he has not yet heard of the “very strict” contractual clauses that protect the intellectual property of his Mercedes engine.

The 25-year-old has been demoted to a reserve driver by Red Bull this season, but will drive alongside Nicholas Latifi for the Mercedes-powered Williams team next year.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said before the Italian Grand Prix last weekend: “It was important for us when a driver from another engine manufacturer joins the team that there are very strict and clear IP confidentiality clauses.

“That was always in great harmony with Williams; they know exactly where we come from and what needs to be protected. “

But when asked about the clauses themselves, Albon said: “I have no idea, to be honest. It has not yet been discussed. Still, things are going well. We have to wait and see what they are. “

The Thai-British driver has been replaced by Sergio Perez at Red Bull this season, but the 25-year-old isn’t ruling out working for her again in the future.

“I would say it would be stupid not to think that Red Bull is a team I could possibly return with. At the moment I don’t really think so long-term.

“It really feels like I have to focus on my top priority this year, which is obviously going to make us win the championship for a good year – and I keep growing on that side.

“You dream a lot, we say, when you think about the future. I just have the feeling that at the moment I have to do the best possible job, concentrate for a short time and see what lies ahead of me. “
