The German marquee unveiled the expected final update for its W12 challenger at the British Grand Prix, which helped Mercedes close the gap to main rivals Red Bull.
Lewis Hamilton took a rematch win to reduce Max Verstappen’s championship advantage to eight points, while Mercedes cut their gap to Red Bull to just four points.
After a first win since the Spanish Grand Prix in May, Mercedes Technical Director James Allison announced that small performance updates may still be in preparation this year.
“We got home pretty cheerful about the upgrade over the weekend,” said Allison. “Is there anything else coming? It may be here and there, but in the huge nature of the major industrial effort of our development program – that was the last big package we will bring this year.

“But there will be a few tweaks here and there that we can efficiently see that we can deliver some performance without distracting ourselves from the great effort that is now being put into next year’s car.”
Andrew Shovlin, Mercedes trackside engineering director, said the “fairly extensive” upgrade package – which included new front and rear “cake pans” and updates to the bargeboard and floor – worked as well as the team had hoped.

“The most important thing for us was that we brought an update kit for the car, we drove to a track that historically suited our car very well, certainly Lewis very well, and the scary thing was when we did. “Since we didn’t perform well, we had to take a long, hard look at ourselves,” said Shovlin.
“Aside from the championship situation and the points at stake and the need to make sure that gap doesn’t get bigger … Team is performing well so it’s very comforting to be able to show that we are still fighting for the championship. “
