After a number of impressive performances for Williams this season, Russell is heavily linked to a move to the Mercedes factory team in 2022.
Since Lewis Hamilton is signed until the end of 2023, Mercedes is currently considering whether to keep Valtteri Bottas or promote his protégé Russell. A final decision should be made this summer, even if it is not officially communicated.
Capito admitted that Williams would “love” Russell, but he would be happy if the 23-year-old gets what he thinks the opportunity to drive for a top team.
“No, and I don’t care,” said Capito when asked if he knew in which direction Mercedes was headed with its driver decision for 2022.

Rejecting the notion that Williams must react quickly to any Mercedes decision, Capito argued that the Grove-based team is now the teams’ most attractive option to finalize their lineup for 2022.
“I think any rider who doesn’t have a permanent seat for next year or an option for next year is talking to us right now,” he added.
“It seems that the Williams seat is currently the most desirable seat in F1 for a team that needs to occupy a seat.”
