Mercedes F1 Junior Vesti takes the first F3 victory in Austria in 2021 | F3

The Mercedes Formula 1 junior did not look back when he overtook F3 leader Dennis Hauger on lap 4 on lap 4.

Vesti controlled the pace from the front and in the end won the race with a 1.1 second lead over Hauger.

Hauger resisted the pressure from Prema team-mate Olli Caldwell to keep second place and secured the Norwegian driver a third podium in Austria.

Hauger’s chances to win were ruined when, after the late virtual safety car phase, he lost ground due to the collision between Jack Doohan and Jak Crawford at Turn 3 on lap 22.

When Doohan went far to surrender the position to Ayumu Iwasa, Crawford ran into his back, causing front wing damage.

Doohan suffered a puncture from contact with Crawford, forcing him to stop and dropping him far from the points.

Aleksandr Smolyar finished fourth after running to second in the early stages and overtaking Hauger on lap 7 on the outside of Turn 4.

Matteo Nannini finished fourth ahead of Iwasa in fifth, both benefiting from a dramatic fall between Victor Martins and Arthur Leclerc.

On lap 14, Leclerc tried to drive down the inside of Martins at Turn 4 but there wasn’t enough room for the Prema driver who forced the Monegasque driver onto the grass and impaled an innocent Clement Novalak right in front of him.

Leclerc and Novalak were pushed out of the race, while Martins finished 25th after being shot after Ido Cohen’s safety car restart.

Caio Collet recovered from a botched start in which he fell back to the bottom of the field and finished in seventh place ahead of Logan Sargeant and Calan Williams.

Carlin’s Jonny Edgar completed the top ten, Oliver Rasmussen and David Schumacher barely missed a score.
