Mercedes F1 junior Vesti secures ART F2 seat

Mercedes Formula 1 protégé Frederik Vesti will move up to the Formula 2 championship in 2022 with ART Grand Prix.

Vesti, 20, has spent the last two years in Formula 3, finishing fourth in both seasons and claiming four wins in total.

Mercedes Juniors have a long history with ART in the second category; Lewis Hamilton clinched the title for the squad in 2006 while George Russell emerged as champion in 2018.

“Signing my FIA Formula 2 contract with ART Grand Prix is a big deal for me,” said Vesti.

“We worked incredibly hard in Formula 3 last season and continuing the climb up to Formula 2 together is important for my next step.

“Now it is crucial to understand all the small details of Formula 2 in order to get the maximum out of 2022.

“The tests in Abu Dhabi went really well and I learned a lot of new things. I can’t wait to be in the car for the first test in Bahrain! I want to thank ART Grand Prix for this great opportunity and for believing in me.”

Vesti will join Sauber-backed youngster Theo Pourchaire at ART.

Only three seats – one each in Campos, Charouz and Trident – remain unconfirmed for 2022.
