Last week, Max Verstappen was credited with his sixth win of the season and received half points after doing a few laps behind the pace car at Spa Francorchamps 5 at Zandvoort, the Netherlands.
Zandvoort has not visited Formula 1 since 1985 when Niki Lauda scored his 25th and final F1 victory at the most recent Dutch GP. F1’s return was scheduled for last year, but this race has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Verstappen is now three points behind Lewis Hamilton in the drivers’ standings, while Formula 1 is entering the second half of the season. Verstappen, a native of Hasselt, Belgium, did not have the opportunity to drive in front of his compatriots last week due to the persistent rain in Spa, but he is likely to have a lot of fans in the neighboring country.
With odds of +110, Verstappen is barely above even money to win this week.
One way to see the American odds is to move the decimal point two places to the left. This tells a bettor what he’ll do with a $ 1 bet, so the return on investment for Verstappen this week is $ 1.10. For bettors who are more comfortable with fractional odds, a bet of +300 is the same as 3/1.
Verstappen is preferred just ahead of Hamilton, who is showing +125 odds this week. Hamilton goes into the weekend with four wins in 2021. The youngest of these came at Silverstone in his native England. Contact with Hamilton on the first lap of the British GP put Verstappen off course and into the barriers. The fall forced him to give up without points while Hamilton overcame a 10-second penalty for avoidable contact and won.
This week, Verstappen expects Dutch fans to voice their criticism of Hamilton loudly.
Hamilton is listed at +125 tons at the Dutch GP.
The story goes on
Hamilton’s team-mate Valtteri Bottas is in third place with a line of +1600. Bottas is fourth in the drivers’ championship, but only five points separate him from Lando Norris from McLaren Racing.
If the betting odds are any indication, Bottas is expected to slightly overtake Norris, who is faced with a line of +3300 that places him fifth in the field of 20 drivers.
Verstappen’s team-mate Sergio Perez is fourth this week with a rate of +1800. Perez is one of only two drivers other than Hamilton or Verstappen to win in the first 12 laps of the F1 season. His victory came in Azerbaijan after Verstappen fell from the lead.
The other 2021 winner, Esteban Ocon, is faced with incredibly high odds of +30,000.
