Lewis Hamilton needs his Mercedes colleagues to “dig deeper” than ever to ensure that both driver and team keep their F1 crowns this season.

Before the Mexican Grand Prix, the Briton was a dozen points behind title rival Max Verstappen, while the Silver Arrows in the constructors’ championship had 23 points ahead of Red Bull.

After the race in Mexico City, however, the situation looks much worse for them, as Hamilton is now 19 points behind the pace in the drivers’ title race and Mercedes is only leading by one point in the fight against Red Bull.

Hamilton stays within striking distance with four races to go, but won’t want to settle for too much work to expect a title-deciding Grand Prix of 2021 in Abu Dhabi next month, which is becoming increasingly likely.

He was more than 16 seconds behind Verstappen, who is fighting for his first F1 world title in Mexico, and must improve those results if he is to set the eighth record.

After the race, however, he was clear in his intentions and asked his Mercedes colleagues to give everything they could for the next month.

“I’ve left everything out there and sometimes that’s not enough,” he said.

“We get up, dig deeper than before and keep fighting.”

His team boss Toto Wolff was clear when he insisted that no one on his team would be too discouraged by the result in Mexico, as more races will be tight and fast.

Toto Wolff slammed Lewis Hamilton for “Senna Prost crash” and Max Verstappen Michael Schumacher “fights” because his close friend Jean Todt provides a rare update

“I’m a pretty realistic person, but I love motorsport because anything can happen,” said the Austrian.

“None of us leaves this track with the mentality that the championship is slipping away from us. There are four races to go, four wins to be won, four DNFs to suffer and we will keep fighting.”

“We know we have a great team and everything to win, but if you look at the mathematical probability, I’d rather be 19 points ahead than behind.”

Hamilton kept home favorites Sergio Perez at bay in Mexico City but was powerless to prevent Verstappen from dominating the game.

The Dutchman recovered from a surprising result in qualifying – he couldn’t match the times of pole-setter Valtteri Bottas and Hamilton in second place – and sped past both Mercedes in the first corner.

Bottas was turned around after Daniel Ricciardo’s contact and Hamilton stayed in second place but couldn’t do anything about it as Verstappen strolled to his ninth win of the season and 18th of his F1 career.

The Dutchman hopes to do it all again next Sunday at Interlagos, another circuit that the Red Bull cars prefer. The team wants to leave Brazil as the front runner in both the drivers ‘and the constructors’ championships.

Nevertheless, Wolff hopes that his team can break the trend and achieve a more positive result in Sao Paulo.

“We are leaving Mexico, the track that we thought was probably one of the worst for us, and heading to Brazil, which has not been much better in the past,” he added.

“But we believe that we have a solid car and that we can be closer to Red Bull than here. I hope we can break the pattern because it was a Bull circuit. We will give everything and try to strike back.”

After Brazil, the F1 paddock is traveling to Qatar for the first time to round off this final triple header of 2021 before the season concludes with Grand Prix in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
