Hamilton started the race in P3, behind Verstappen and his teammate Valtteri Bottas. The Dutchman got away quickly and built up his tremendous pace early on. Hamilton managed to edge Bottas into second with a brilliant move on the first lap of the race.
Max Verstappen pitted on lap 25 for hard tires with his team expecting the set to last until the end of the 70-lap race. Although Hamilton and Mercedes initially chose the same strategy, they later opted for a fresh set of medium tyres. The meanwhile seven-time world champion was able to catch up with the young Dutchman in a drastic way.
On Lap 67 of the Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton caught up with the reigning World Champion who, however, was unable to defend himself as he was running on old hard tyres.
The Brit won the 2019 Hungarian Grand Prix, his seventh win at the venue. The Mercedes driver won again in 2020 but missed out on a ninth win in 2021 thanks to Esteban Ocon and others.

A chaotic start destroyed the chances of drivers like Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and Valtteri Bottas at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix, resulting in a red flag. When the track suddenly dried out, everyone but Lewis Hamilton switched to slick tyres, resulting in a standing solo start for the Brit.
However, Mercedes got their strategy wrong as Hamilton struggled for pace on his first lap after the restart. The Brit had to pit on slicks and came back in 14th place.
Lewis Hamilton fought his way back to P5 and slashed through the field, but was then challenged by former teammate Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard defended against Hamilton for several laps, saving his teammate Ocon from being passed by the Briton, who had found tremendous pace.
