Lewis Hamilton is making a special gift to the fans who took part in the Belgian Grand Prix last weekend, where heavy rain prevented any racing.
The Mercedes driver shared a post from fan account Lhamiltoncrew on his Instagram profile that promised “something very special” for “all fans who visited Spa”. Fans who present “proof of purchase” of tickets to the race will receive “an exclusive gift from Lewis”.
Hamilton strongly criticized the handling of Formula 1 in last week’s race, where half points were awarded after only three laps behind the safety car. He called the race a “farce” and said fans who bought tickets deserve a refund.
Formula 1 confirmed on Wednesday that it is considering “ticket holder options” to recognize the lack of action they saw at Spa-Francorchamps.
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said the decision on compensation or the like for the fans was a matter for Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and the spa race organizer.
“Stefano and the promoter are looking into this situation,” he said. “That is up to the organizers.
“Of course we’re all in the boat together and if it costs Stefano, it costs the teams, so we would donate indirectly anyway. But I think that can be solved in between [the] commercial rights holder and promoter and we are not part of this conference. “
