- The contract of seven-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton with Mercedes ended after his 2020 season.
- While everyone expects him to sign with Mercedes again, this is not a closed deal.
- Hamilton is the highest paid Formula 1 driver with a grand total of more than $ 40 million a year.
Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher, the younger brother of the great Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher, says Lewis Hamilton’s 2021 contract freeze doesn’t look good for anyone.
Schumacher says it is downright “embarrassing”.
Hamilton’s failure to sign a deal technically means Mercedes will be the only team with an official vacancy ahead of the new season next month. And this vacancy is the best place in all of racing.
Schumacher told Sky Germany that Hamilton was taking a “risk”, perhaps not only with its image, but also because Mercedes had the hard-fought youngster George Russell in the starting blocks at Williams.

When asked about the delayed contract negotiations with Hamilton, Schumacher said: “One thing is clear – Formula 1 is bigger than any individual. It is now February and the most important man in Formula 1 at the moment – the seven-time world champion – is still. ”Not signed.
“I think that’s a shame and, to be honest, a bit embarrassing. Lewis mustn’t forget the risk of what he’s doing.”
Hamilton and Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff went into the offseason without contracts. Wolff has since signed to try to expand Mercedes ‘seven consecutive Formula 1 Constructors’ championships.
The 45-year-old Schumacher, who started 180 races with six wins between 1997 and 2007, said he wasn’t sure why Hamilton and Mercedes would still agree, adding: “It’s always been said that it’s all about the money goes, but I hope not. “
