Lewis Hamilton has identified a key aspect of his life that keeps him fresh and in his battle with Max Verstappen as the seven-time world champion uses his keen interest in fashion to “separate him from sport”.

Hamilton is currently having one of his toughest championship fights at Mercedes with Red Bull and Max Verstappen.

Although he’s currently leading the championship standings, the intensity of the fight only separates two points that separate the two on their way to the Turkish Grand Prix.

After the Italian Grand Prix, Hamilton flew to New York to attend the Met Gala, which highlights emerging black designers, and recently returned for Fashion Week from Paris and England.

Hamilton, who already has seven world titles, says he’s using his interest in fashion as an escape from the intensity.

The 36-year-old said on the Thursday before the Turkish Grand Prix: “I love the fashion scene, I think I was there a long time ago for my first fashion show.

“I think it’s a completely different world than Formula 1, obviously, F1 obviously doesn’t focus on that.

“It’s obviously very corporate and there is no fashion, actually in Formula 1. I always had the feeling that it’s a place where it’s not easy to be yourself.

“And when I went to a fashion show during Fashion Week, for example, you are surrounded by people from all walks of life who express themselves in different ways and I love this environment in which I can be and express myself.

Hamilton wore a kilt to the press conference and added, “I’m doing this on the racetrack now. And I feel free to do so.

“I only went to one fashion show, I haven’t seen nearly as many as in the past.

“I love being able to part with the sport, the intensity of this whole season is just as difficult for everyone who is on the track, and so being able to have something different, a different outlet.

“Something else to focus on will help reduce weight.

“And when I come back it always feels fresh when it comes to getting free because I don’t think about it every day.

Hamilton wants to overtake Michael Schumacher this season by winning an unprecedented eighth world title.

But Hamilton admitted that experience from previous battles helped him find ways to ground him.

“In general, I find it relatively easy [to relax] because I said I have these other outlets that I can blow off steam in a lot of different ways.

“The most important thing is to be able to return to the racing environment fresh, relaxed, positive and not really worry.

“I can arrive and I love doing my job. So let’s just take it one week at a time or one race at a time.

“Just always try to stand up, spend a lot of time talking to the team about how we can develop and improve.

“But I’ve been doing this for a long time, so I’ve personally found ways, it worked well for me, won’t work for everyone, but I’ve found the way that I know what gets me on course and what is taking me off course can, and stick to it. “
