Hamilton vs. Verstappen: Their Careers in Numbers

Former Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone believes that Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton are “bullying” Red Bull star Max Verstappen in the fight for the world championship.

The 2021 F1 season was one of the greatest years in the history of the sport thanks to the gigantic World Championship race between Mercedes Hamilton and Red Bull Verstappen.

The two men have won 17 races together this season, with the Dutchman taking nine wins, Hamilton’s eight, and making them into the finals of the year with the same number of points.

Their rivalry has been one for ages. The two collided at Silverstone and Monza ahead of the dramatic Saudi Arabia Grand Prix last weekend, which ruled drama and controversy.

Sunday’s insane race featured two red flags, multiple virtual safety car interventions and five drivers crashed before Hamilton won his eighth race of the season.

The Brit saw the checkered flag to draw level with the drivers’ standings before the final next weekend in Abu Dhabi, while Verstappen finished second despite two time penalties totaling 15 seconds.

The two collided on lap 37 when Verstappen slowed to let Hamilton pass after the Dutchman was instructed to return the place to the seven-time world champion.

The Mercedes man was not informed of the events, but rammed the Red Bull in the rear.

Hamilton insisted that his rival “slow down” him while Verstappen said he was just trying to let the British pass.

In the face of much controversy, Ecclestone believes Hamilton and Mercedes play games with Verstappen.

“Max is a kid compared to Lewis and the worst part is that Lewis has a massive advertising campaign for him,” he said. “You pushed Max the whole time and then the race director checked because Toto went to the race director.

“Max has to face more than one race because he also has them on his back because they bully him and don’t play fair. It’s a psychological game.

“Max has a couple of years of racing behind him, but not as many years on the road as Lewis.

“It built character and knowing he was going to win the race, with Mercedes being the dominant force in recent years, made him a much stronger character than Max.

“For Max it is the first this season in which he has a car that is regularly victorious, while before it was anything but competitive.”

Ecclestone is delighted to have one of them win – but he hasn’t attended a race since competing in the 2019 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – the last event before the pandemic hit the world.

The 91-year-old was removed from his post as CEO of the Formula 1 Group on January 23, 2017 after the company was taken over by American mass media giant Liberty Media.

Verstappen has another race win than Hamilton, which means the Brit will have to beat his World Cup rivals in Abu Dhabi this weekend. If both fail, Verstappen will be crowned world champion.

Mercedes has not lost a drivers’ championship since Sebastian Vettel in the last of its four consecutive titles with Red Bull in 2013, with Hamilton winning six and former teammate Nico Rosberg taking the title in 2016.

Formula 1 will travel to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the Yas Marina Circuit on December 12th, with Red Bull star Verstappen and Mercedes Hamilton tied on points before the last race of the season.
