“It’s going to be very close with Mercedes” – Sergio Perez had a brilliant race in Bahrain and now wants to go one step further and catapult Red Bull onto the podium in Imola.
Sergio Perez underscored his status as one of the best drivers on the grid with a mammoth performance in Bahrain. The Mexican started from the pit lane to finish P5 and won the title of “Driver of the Day”. But he wants a lot more, with a view to the podium in this weekend’s Imola extravaganza.
“I don’t have a set goal, I just want to get this process done as quickly as possible. The team needs me up there and I have to be up there, so it’s not that I’m here and relax, that everything will come.
“I work hard, the engineers work hard with me and it will click at some point. And when that happens we will be very strong. “

Red Bull wants to overthrow Mercedes in Imola
After a dreary last season in terms of the fight at the top, we have a real belter in our hands this season with Red Bull leading the fight to the reigning Mercedes. Max Verstappen almost won it at Sakhir, and after Perez’s debut, Red Bull starts as favorites this weekend – something we haven’t said in a long time.
“I think it will be very close with Mercedes and we’ll see if the fight has anything to do with the racetrack. It will be interesting to see how we are in Imola on a very different path than Bahrain and how we compare with them.
“My goal is a good race and I’m looking forward to the weekend. Hopefully we can come back at Imola and fight for a podium and hopefully for a win. In contrast to Bahrain, qualifying at Imola is very important because you can hardly overtake there, but I like it. “
