The Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team is pleased to announce that the reigning Formula 1 constructor world champion and the reigning F1 driver world champion will continue together in 2021. The Mercedes works team and Lewis have signed a new contract, one of the sport’s most successful collaborations to continue for the ninth season in a row.
Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff
A significant part of the new agreement builds on Lewis and Mercedes’ shared commitment to diversity and inclusion in motorsport. This takes place in the form of a joint non-profit foundation that has set itself the task of supporting more diversity and inclusion in all its forms in motorsport.
Lewis made his F1 debut with the Mercedes F1 engine customer team McLaren in 2007 and was powered by Mercedes-Benz engines in all of his 266 Grands Prix. In 2013 he joined the Mercedes works team and has since won 74 F1 races and six drivers’ championships with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team. In 2020 he broke Michael Schumacher’s record for victory and is now the record holder for all Formula 1 racing victories.
Lewis Hamilton
“I’m looking forward to my ninth season with my Mercedes team-mates. Our team has achieved incredible things together and we look forward to building on our success and continuously improving, both on and off the track.
“I am equally determined to continue the path we began to make motorsport more diverse for future generations and I am grateful that Mercedes has been extremely supportive of my call to address this issue. I am proud to say that this year we are continuing these efforts by creating a foundation dedicated to diversity and inclusion in sport. I’m inspired by everything we can build together and I can’t wait to hit the road again in March. “
Toto Wolff, CEO & main team
“We were always attuned to Lewis that we would go ahead, but the very unusual year we had in 2020 meant that it was taking some time to complete the process. Together we decided to extend the sporting relationship for another season and to start a long-term project to take the next step in our joint commitment to more diversity in our sport. Lewis’ competitive record stands next to the best the sports world has ever seen, and he’s a valued ambassador for our brand and our partners. The history of Mercedes and Lewis has been written in the history books of our sport for the past eight seasons, and we are hungry to compete and add more chapters to it. “
Markus Schäfer, non-executive chairman
“We are very pleased to keep the most successful F1 driver of the current era in the most successful F1 team of the current era. Lewis is not just an incredibly talented driver; he also works very hard for his performance and is extremely hungry. He shares his passion for performance with the entire team, which is why this collaboration is so successful. But Lewis is also a warm personality who cares deeply about the world around him and wants to make a difference. As a company, Mercedes-Benz shares this sense of responsibility and is proud to be taking a new, shared basis to improve diversity in motorsport. Opening up the sport to underrepresented groups will be important for its future development and we are determined to make a positive impact. “
