Lewis Hamilton returns for a ninth season with the Mercedes-Petronas Formula 1 team. Hamilton and Mercedes announced on Monday that the two sides had signed a one-year deal.
Hamilton, 36, is the four-time Formula 1 defending champion. He has a total of seven championships to top that all-time list with Michael Schumacher. And with limited changes to the Formula 1 rules to the cars for 2021, Hamilton is a big favorite to break that record this season and break it in the colors of Mercedes.
“I’m looking forward to my ninth season with my Mercedes team-mates,” said Hamilton in a press release today. “Our team has achieved incredible things together and we look forward to building on our success and improving continuously, both on and off the track.
“I am equally determined to continue the path we began to make motorsport more diverse for future generations and I am grateful that Mercedes has been extremely supportive of my call to address this issue. I am proud that we are continuing these efforts ”this year by establishing a foundation dedicated to diversity and inclusion in sport. I’m inspired by everything we can build together and I can’t wait to get back on track in March. “
Hamilton’s signature comes just a few weeks after Mercedes F1 team boss Toto Wolff extended his own contract by two years. Wolff was also in the final year of his deal with Mercedes before signing the extension.
Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff will be back at Mercedes in 2021, and that’s bad news for the rivals hoping to find their place at the top of the Formula 1 mountain.

“We were always attuned to Lewis that we would go ahead, but the very unusual year we had in 2020 meant it took some time to complete the process,” said Wolff. “Together we decided to extend the sporting relationship for another season and to start a long-term project to take the next step in our joint commitment to greater diversity in our sport.
“Lewis’ competition record stands next to the best the sporting world has ever seen, and he’s a valued ambassador for our brand and our partners. The history of Mercedes and Lewis has been written in the history books of our sport for the past eight seasons – and so are we are hungry to compete and add more chapters. “
Hamilton’s signing rounds off the stupid 2021 season as all 10 Formula 1 teams now have their driver lineups. Hamilton will work again with Valtteri Bottas at Mercedes. The two have been at Mercedes since 2017. Mercedes has dominated Formula 1 in recent history with seven consecutive Formula 1 constructors’ championships.
Hamilton is the all-time front runner with 95 Formula 1 victories. Hamilton surpassed Schumacher’s record of 91 in Portugal in 2020.
