The appointment method of Formula 1 was questioned by Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff in view of the end of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2021.
Many fans were filled with questions about the rules of Formula 1 in general due to the final laps of the season finale at the Yas Marina Circuit.
The decision by the stewards not to let lapped cars pass the safety car on lap 56 of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix before changing their mind a lap later confused many.
The revised decision to only let five lapped cars pass between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen before the safety car is abruptly retracted raised eyebrows, especially at Toto Wolff.
Wolff and Mercedes quickly protested. When the protests were dismissed, they wanted to appeal, only to withdraw their intent a few days later.
In an interview with Bild in Germany, Wolff was anything but impressed with the FIA’s handling of the situation in Abu Dhabi.
When asked about the appointment method of Formula 1 and whether they felt they could win their protests, Wolff said:
“No. Because the FIA would have been accused and judge at the same time. That triggers a feeling of powerlessness. Just like on Sunday in the last lap. That’s how I last felt as a child.”
Wolff and his team had initially considered calling the International Court of Arbitration to resolve the matter. The FIA has now announced that it will investigate the matter.
Mercedes announced they would hold the FIA accountable and are hoping for more watertight laws in F1 in 2022.
