F1 teams are not trying to reintroduce tire set options

Pierre Gasly, AlphaTauri, Yas Marina, 2021

Formula 1 teams will not be able to choose their tire allocations for a third year in 2022 as they have shown no interest in reinstating the rule suspended due to the pandemic.

Until the end of 2019, teams could choose how many sets of the compounds nominated by Pirelli for each race they wanted. This rule was dropped in 2020 when the championship was put on hold by the pandemic to allow races to be organized and run as soon as possible when the season resumes. “We had to find a solution to the pandemic in order to be able to react more quickly,” said Pirelli’s motorsport boss Mario Isola.

But while F1’s schedule has almost returned to normal in 2022, teams will still not have the opportunity to adjust their tire choices this year. Isola said teams had no interest in bringing the rule back.

“The teams came back to us and said the system was actually quite good, we want to keep it for the future,” he explained in response to a question from RaceFans. “So in the end it wasn’t our decision to continue with this fixed assignment.

“Teams told us that if they have a fixed allocation and it’s the same for everyone, so there’s no benefit to one or the other, they can start planning that fixed allocation instead of spending time, resources and people to.” thinking about a group more medium or a set softer less. They have this allocation, they have to work around that.”

The move to an all-new 18-inch tire size for 2022 has also kept teams from seeking control of their tire allocations this year, Isola said.

“In 2020 they said we want to move on for 2021. In 2021, with the new product for 2022, no one was confident in determining its composition and breakdown and that’s why they want to move on.

“I don’t know if they want to change in 2023 but for now this is the answer.”
