F1 sprint races could be scrapped in 2022 due to disagreements between teams over the allocated budget for the event. The newly introduced qualification system attracted a lot of positive attention from the media and fans as it offered additional races.

According to Zak Brown, no sprint races may take place in 2022.

“Some teams wanted a $5 million budget cap increase, which was ridiculous. These teams should explain why there are no sprint races.”

The sport decided to expand the number of sprint races in 2022 after hosting three such successful events in 2021. The FIA had initially planned to hold six such races in 2022, but there has been no official confirmation yet as some teams seek a larger financial allocation for the short but thrilling event.

In 2021, teams were given a budget of $100,000 per sprint race and an additional $100,000 could be spent on the car if serious damage was sustained. However, some teams felt that this amount was too low to justify the event and reportedly asked for more funding from the FIA.

According to McLaren F1 CEO Zak Brown, one particular team is even asking for a $5 million budget increase to ensure sprint races don’t eat into teams’ already low budgets in 2022. The American also claimed some teams are complaining because they haven’t had to make do with a fixed budget so far. Brown claimed there was very little sprint racing-related damage to cars in 2021, Brown said:

“It might be new for some teams to have to manage a budget but I think it fits the spirit of the sport so you can balance income with expenses and solve that. But I think the revenue will increase over time and I think we have to be very careful, to be financially sustainable, that certain teams take the opportunity to try and increase that all the time. We have to defend ourselves against that.”

Zak Brown thinks it would be wise to scrap F1 sprint races in 2022

The #F1 talk of sprint racing and money seems logical for a potential increase in fractional use etc. You need to stimulate the sprint more with higher points. Go from 10 for 1st to 1 for 10th like the old point system. Get more racing action with lower teams The #F1 talk about sprint races and money seems logical for a potential increase in fractional use etc. You need to stimulate the sprint more with higher points. McLaren is one of the F1 teams that seems to be fine with the current F1 sprint racing budget. Despite the financial approval, Zak Brown claims it would be prudent to scrap the 2022 races and focus on reaching a common conclusion between all teams for the 2023 season. He said:

“I want to see that we don’t get into a situation where we’re just voting on 2022 because we’ve passed an important date and therefore need to get eight votes. If you want to go hard, I think we should now commit everything to 2023 without raising the budget cap. Then maybe we can compromise and raise it a bit.”

The F1 Commission needs 28 out of 30 votes to make a rule change the following season. Such a supermajority is unlikely to be achieved in the coming months. However, Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari are reportedly unhappy with the sprint race’s budget allocation and could force their customer teams to side with them in the voting process.

There is currently no official confirmation on the status of F1 sprint races in 2022, but fans can remain hopeful they will see an additional 100km run across six venues in 2022.
